Iorio Gelato's journey began with a love for authentic Italian treats and a deep connection to our family heritage. Siblings Mary and Nick Lemmer, driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of their great-grandparents Luigi and Maria Iorio, founded Iorio’s Gelato in 2004 to bring a taste of Italy to Michigan.

The Roots of Our Heritage

Luigi and Maria Iorio emigrated from Morrone del Sannio, Italy to Philadelphia, bringing with them the rich traditions and flavors of their homeland. Luigi, a determined entrepreneur, built apartments, houses, and a general store, laying the foundation for the Iorio family’s legacy. This legacy inspired Mary and Nick to celebrate and share their Italian roots through the art of gelato making.

From Italian Ice to Artisan Gelato

Our story started with a simple idea: to enjoy Italian water ice, a beloved summer treat from our youth, right here in Michigan. With support and seed investment from our parents, we launched Iorio Italian Ice with a small food cart in 2004. The refreshing, thirst-quenching treat quickly became a local favorite, paving the way for our expansion.

A transformative trip to Italy opened our eyes to the world of gelato. Inspired by the rich flavors and creamy texture of this Italian staple, we decided to bring authentic gelato back to Michigan. In 2010, we opened our first store in Ann Arbor, transforming an old cell phone accessory shop into a cozy slice of Italy.

Commitment to Quality

At Iorio Gelato, quality is paramount. We source the finest ingredients from around the world—pistachios from Sicily, vanilla from Madagascar, and local milk from Michigan. Every batch of gelato is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a perfect balance of flavor and texture.

A Growing Legacy

Our flagship store in Ann Arbor became a beloved spot for students, families, and gelato enthusiasts. The journey continued with the opening of our East Lansing location, bringing our authentic gelato and coffee, in partnership with Zingerman’s, to the Trowbridge Center.
